The Religion of Christ

{Pro 25:11 NASB} Like apples of gold in settings of silver Is a word spoken in right circumstances.

Proverbs 25:12 {NASB} Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a wise reprove to a listening ear.

Proverbs 15:31 {NASB} He whose ear listens to the life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.

{ I Timothy 4:16 KJV} Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.ย

{Titus 1:9 KJV} Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

{Eph 4:29 NASB} Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

Proverbs 15:23 {NASB} A man has joy in an apt answer, and how delightful is a timely word.

A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth,.... When his advice is asked, and he gives good and wholesome counsel, and that being taken succeeds; it is a pleasure to a man that he is capable of assisting his friend, and doing him service, or a common good, whether it be in things natural, civil, or religious; when his speech is with salt, seasoned with grace, and he knows how he ought to answer every man; when that which is good proceeds from him, and is to the use of edifying, and ministers grace to the hearers, and is acceptable to them; when with readiness he gives an answer to every man that asks him a reason of the hope that is in him, with meekness and fear,

and a wordย spokenย in due season, how goodย is it? whether by way of advice and counsel to such who stand in need of it, or of exhortation and instruction to those that want it, or of comfort to those that are distressed; such is a word of promise spoken and applied by the Spirit of God to the hearts of his people in a time of need; and such is the Gospel of peace, pardon, righteousness, and salvation, as spoken by Christ and his ministers to weary and wounded souls; it cannot be well and fully expressed how sweet, how good, how suitable, as well as seasonable...

{Rom 14:13 NASB} Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this--not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother's way.ย

{Rom. 13:8 ESV} Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

{Rom 14:19 NASB} So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.ย

{Rom 12:18 NASB} If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.

It is the work of parents to train their children to proper habits of speech. The very best school for this culture is the homelife. From the earliest years the children should be taught to speak respectfully and lovingly to their parents and to one another. They should be taught that only words of gentleness, truth, and purity must pass their lips. Let the parents themselves be daily learners in the school of Christ. Then by precept and example they can teach their children the use of โ€œsound speech, that cannot be condemnedโ€ (Titus 2:8). This is one of the greatest and most responsible of their duties.โ€”Christโ€™s Object Lessons, 337, 338.

The power of speech is a talent that should be diligently cultivated. Of all the gifts we have received from God, none is capable of being a greater blessing than this. With the voice we convince and persuade, with it we offer prayer and praise to God, and with it we tell others of the Redeemerโ€™s love. How important, then, that it be so trained as to be most effective for good....

By diligent effort all may acquire the power to read intelligibly, and to speak in a full, clear, round tone, in a distinct and impressive manner. By doing this we may greatly increase our efficiency as workers for Christ.

Every Christian is called to make known to others the unsearchable riches of Christ....

The right culture and use of the power of speech has to do with every line of Christian work; it enters into the homelife, and into all our intercourse with one another. We should accustom ourselves to speak in pleasant tones, to use pure and correct language, and words that are kind and courteous. Sweet, kind words are as dew and gentle showers to the soul. The Scripture says of Christ that grace was poured into His lips that He might โ€œknow how to speak a word in season to him that is wearyโ€ (Psalm 45:2; Isaiah 50:4). And the Lord bids us, โ€œLet your speech be alway with graceโ€ (Colossians 4:6), โ€œthat it may minister grace unto the hearersโ€ (Ephesians 4:29).

In seeking to correct or reform others we should be careful of our words.... All who would advocate the principles of truth need to receive the heavenly oil of love. Under all circumstances reproof should be spoken in love. Then our words will reform but not exasperate. Christ by His Holy Spirit will supply the force and the power. This is His work.โ€”The Acts of the Apostles, 335-337.

Oil of Love Removes Bitternessโ€”Do not suffer resentment to ripen into malice. Do not allow the wound to fester and break out in poisoned words, which taint the minds of those who hear. Do not allow bitter thoughts to continue to fill your mind.... Go to your brother and in humility and sincerity talk with him about the matter....

All heaven is interested in the interview between the one who has been injured and the one who is in error.... The oil of love removes the soreness caused by the wrong. The Spirit of God binds heart to heart, and there is music in heaven over the union brought about.โ€”Testimonies for the Church 7:261, 262 (1902).

The Heart That Gives Love for Hatredโ€”It is not earthly rank, nor birth, nor nationality, nor religious privilege, which proves that we are members of the family of God; it is love, a love that embraces all humanity. Even sinners whose hearts are not utterly closed to God's Spirit will respond to kindness; while they may give hate for hate, they will also give love for love. But it is only the Spirit of God that gives love for hatred. To be kind to the unthankful and to the evil, to do good hoping for nothing again, is the insignia of the royalty of heaven, the sure token by which the children of the Highest reveal their high estate.โ€”Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, 75 (1896). . 2MCP 529.5-2MCP 529.7

Language to Be an Outward Expression of Inward Graceโ€”The chief requisite of language is that it be pure and kind and trueโ€”โ€œthe outward expression of an inward grace.โ€ ... The best school for this language study is the home.

Kind words are as dew and gentle showers to the soul. The Scripture says of Christ that grace was poured into His lips, that He might โ€œknow how to speak a word in season to him that is weary.โ€ And the Lord bids us, โ€œLet your speech be alway with grace,โ€ โ€œthat it may minister grace unto the hearers.โ€ AH 435.1-AH 435.2

Deal Gentlyโ€”Let us not try to work ourselves or others, but let us depend upon the Holy Spirit. Deal gently with human beings. With hearts full of spiritual tenderness, melt your way into convicted hearts. Let your words be dipped in the heavenly oil from the two olive branches. We need the golden oil emptied into prepared vessels, that it may be communicated to those who are seeking for the truth. Ever remember that it is โ€œnot by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.โ€โ€”Letter 200, 1899. . 2MCP 440.2

The religion that does not govern the temper and control the tongue, making men kind, patient, and forbearing, is not ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ซ๐ž๐ฅ๐ข๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‚๐ก๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ. It will not secure salvation. 16LtMs, Ms 101, 1901, par. 32

Do you in your words, in your spirit, in your actions, resemble Christ? If in word and spirit you represent the character of Christ, then you are Christians; for to be a Christian is to be Christlike. The tongue will testify of the principles that characterize the life; it is the sure test of what power controls the heart. We may judge our own spirit and principles by the words that proceed from our lips. The tongue is always to be under the control of the Holy Spirit. . LHU 148.1-LHU 148.2

When poor, wounded, bruised souls come to you for words of hope, you are to speak to them the words of Christ. Do you refuse to give them pleasant, courteous, kind words? Those who speak as Christ spoke will never plant bitter words like barbed arrows in the wounded soul. โ€œThe Lord hearkened, and heard.โ€ Will you bear in mind that the Lord hears the words we speak, and is acquainted with the spirit that prompts our action? Christ is the defense of all that are hidden in Him.

Bear in mind that every unkind word, every ruthless thrust, is recorded in the books of heaven as given to Christ in the person of His suffering ones. Is it not Christlike to speak kind words, comforting words, even though you feel inclined to do otherwise? Is it not Christlike to help lift the burdens when they press heavily upon souls whom God has valued so highly as to give His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life? ....
